What solutions do we bring to conflict resolution?

The city is the first scale of intervention, a training ground for building a different model of society. At a time when security is increasingly framed through a securitarian lens — from Italy’s DDL 1160 and the Caivano decree, to the ReArm EU plan and the war in Ukraine — it is more urgent than ever to articulate and implement inclusive, community-centered alternatives.

Our colleague Daniela Patti, based on the experience carried out over the past years, discussed how at the Biennale of Democracy in Turin how it is necessary to overcome the pilot project approach to develop a large-scale strategy instead. Daniela brought the example of the City of Turin in Urbact’s 2Nite as well as the bottom-up experience from the Quarticciolo neighbourhood as opportunities to develop a new inclusive approach.

Vitandrea Marzano spoke about his experience in the Mayor’s cabinet working on priority neighbourhoods in Bari, where experiences of youth inclusion and social economy became opportunities of launching a territory. Here you can read more about these experiences.

Finally Agostino Riitano spoke about the role of culture in European and Italian capital of culture in promoting territories and creating a new vision, especially focusing on Matera and Procida.

We thank Simone D’Antonio for the fabulous moderation and Urban Lab for having organised this very interesting panel.

Now in its ninth edition, Biennale Democrazia is a permanent public workshop, rooted in the community, enabling debate among all citizens, able to involve younger generations: its aim is to offer foundational education in political culture and circulate this knowledge turning it into democratic practice. Biennale Democrazia (BD) is a cultural event promoted by the City of Turin and organized by the Fondazione per la Cultura Torino (the Turin Culture Foundation.
