On 23-26 September 2025, Placemaking Week Europe will be held in Reggio Emilia, Italy.
In preparation for the event, Placemaking Europe board member Levente Polyák visited Reggio Emilia on 10-12 March with fellow board and staff members to meet the hosts, discuss the city’s main challenges and explore the venues.
On 11 March at the Laboratorio Aperto dei Chiostri di San Pietro, Levente participated at the public event “La strada è uno spazio pubblico?”, discussing actions, strategies and policies to rethink public space by making it an attractive, welcoming and safe place, and what role communities can play in re-appropriating the streets. Moderated by the Digital Freaks community, the discussion also involved Agathe Gillet, co-founder of the Cinnica network, advisor for a child- and adolescent-friendly city in Bologna; Matteo Puglisi, architect and activist of Sai che puoi? association for the quality and enhancement of public space through active citizen participation in Milan and Giulia Sicignano, architect and urban planner at STIPO Italy/AMAT Milan.
Reggio Emilia, a city in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, is famous for its history, active civil society, social cooperatives and early childhood development and research. Despite its high living standards, strong local economy and excellent institutions, Reggio Emilia faces challenges related to mobility at the agglomeration scale, the economic dynamism of the historical centre, health and well-being, as well as accommodating diversity.
With venues ranging from the Chiostri di San Pietro, the Teatro Municipale, the Parco dell’Innovazione in the ex industrial site of the Officine Reggiane and the Centre Loris Malaguzzi, Placemaking Week will showcase the best of a mid-size Italian city, combining the city’s historical architectural heritage with converted post-industrial spaces and contemporary educational and social infrastructure.
After the visit, Placemaking Europe opened its call for programme proposals for the Placemaking Week:
